Watch the NBA 2K22 gameplay trailer
On August 30, NBA 2K22 released a one-minute, 35-second gameplay trailer. It’s low on real upgrades, focusing instead on new animations, face likenesses, and massive dunks — albeit it all looks amazing. You may view it right now:
NBA 2K22 release date: September 10
The 2K22 release date of 2K’s gorgeous baller follows a predictable pattern. NBA 2K18 was released on September 15, 2018, NBA 2K19 was released on September 7, 2018, and NBA 2K20 and NBA 2K21 were released on September 5, 2019, and September 4, 2020, respectively. The PS5 and Xbox Series X versions arrived later, in mid-November, however that was due to the systems’ pre-Christmas release date.
This year, synchronicity was restored across all formats and generations, with NBA 2K22 release date set for Friday, September 10, 2021. The game is available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC — albeit the latter edition does utilize previous-gen technology, which has sparked some legitimate debate.
NBA 2K22 cover stars are Parker and Doncic
The untimely loss of basketball superstar Kobe Bryant at the age of 41 prompted 2K to defy tradition when it came to the NBA 2K21 cover. In honor of Bryant, the game was released in a special ‘Mamba Forever’ edition with Bryant on the box, while the ordinary editions featured different cover stars for each system generation.
New Orleans Pelicans power forward Zion Williamson was the face of the PS5 and Xbox Series X, while Trail Blazers point guard Damian Lilliard was the face of the PS4 and Xbox
The latest news from the world of competitive gaming
In a recent interview, NBA 2K22 lead developer Zak DeMeunis spoke about the direction of the series, its evolution through years of development, and what it will be like to release the 2018-19 season. “In the beginning, we were really focused on the 2017-18 season,” he said. “We had the NBA 2k16 update that added the ‘Challenge Mode.’ We were shooting for the 2018-19 season and then this happened…” “We were like, ‘What?’ We were shooting for the 2021-22 season and then this happened and it kind of confused us.” When DeMeunis was able to get his hands on the NBA 2K19 engine and start writing code, he started brainstorming what could be done with it. “I was like, ‘Let’s do the first ever NBA 2K series!’” he said. “We had the opportunity to work on a new type of game in NBA 2K19 and so we were like, ‘How about this?’”
Biggest upsets, biggest surprises, and mostEpic Moments of the Season
Just one week after winning the NBA 2K19 title, the Toronto Raptors upset the 10-time NBA champions, ending the series in seven games. The series featured some of the best NBA players of all time, including current and former stars Allen Iverson, Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Paul Milsom, and Dwyane Wade. “It’s such an incredible opportunity to bring back the NBA title to Toronto,” said NBA 2K22 creative lead Dave Chenekh. “With the Raptors, it was the first time since the Bellevue switch that we had a team that actually won a game. Also, I think it’s important to remember that this was the most competitive team in NBA history and it was a very nervous campaign for the players.” The Pelicans also had a great season, finishing with a 40-34 record, good for fifth place in the Eastern Conference. The team also finished with the best winning percentage in NBA history, having won 36 out of “their” 37 games.
Epic Moments of the Season
The NBA 2K Series has won plenty of awards throughout the years. The first being the prestigious NBA 2K14 Best Overall Game award, which goes to the winner of the NBA 2K Series. Additionally, the series has been honored with numerous other awards and nominations, including the 2017 NBA 2K15 Best of Show and NBA 2K16 Best of All-Time. Epic moments of the season include the following: Last Man Standing: The NBA 2K Series has won Best Overall Game five times, and the NBA 2K17 trophy for the winner has gone on to be retired. The NBA 2K19 trophy for the winner has gone on to be retired, as well. Closing a Game: NBA 2K21 winner and series MVP Jamal Murray collected his third consecutive NBA 2K21 trophy, becoming the first player in NBA history to collect three NBA titles with three different teams. Helping the Beastie Boys of New York City: The NBA 2K18 trophy for the NBA 2K Series MVP went to New York City, where the NBA 2K19 trophy was presented to the winner. New York City had the best year in NBA history in 2017-18, so this trophy was a great send-off from that city.
The NBA 2K Series has been a favorite since its release in 2014, and fans can rest easy knowing this season’s installments are going to be extremely competitive. NBA 2K22 is expected to be one of the most anticipated games of the year, and with its release date set for February 9, it’s important to be ready.
